The NFT industry has found support in various sectors for its ability to connect projects to the public. The music industry is one of the sectors that has benefited massively. Artist Billie Eilish, it will be recalled, announced her presence in this space by filing a pair of trademark applications for her name and the Blohsh logo with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with her company Lash Music LLC. The latest to join the list of those interested in NFT’s activities is record label Sony Music Entertainment.
According to USPTO licensed trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, the company has filed a trademark application for the Columbia Records logo.
“SonyMusic has filed a trademark application for the Columbia Records logo and plans to use it for MediaMusic, podcast production, artist management and music distribution services supported by NFT, etc.“, he revealed.

As noted in the document, the company desires that downloadable audio and video recordings containing live music performances be authenticated by NFTs. In addition, downloadable image files containing images and illustrations, and downloadable multimedia files containing illustrations, text, audio, and video relating to live musical performances should be authenticated by NFTs. The trademark application also covers entertainment services and promotion. This includes marketing and advertising for artists and promotion of music, audio and video recordings as well as music services for others. The trademark has also been filed for its online entertainment service which includes the provision of downloadable audio and audio-visual recordings related to music and music entertainment.
Entering the world of NFTs would provide SONY with new ways to monetize its work and give artists the opportunity to connect with their fans. Music can be represented by NFTs in the form of unique blockchain-based tokens. They can also be sold on various related marketplaces like OpenSea, or traded on manual and automated exchanges like NFTProfit.
In March, Kings of Leon became the first band to release an album as an NFT. The NFT craze is not limited to the music industry, as soccer legend David Beckham’s venture capital firm DB Ventures Limited has filed three separate trademark applications with the USPTO.
