Sony has been announcing its ambitions in the field of electric cars since 2021, but at that time, they were only to offer one-off solutions for partners. In 2022, the Japanese company announced at CES that it wants to develop its own cars, and now it seems that it has found a partner. Sony, along with Honda, have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding, by which the two Japanese companies undertake to develop electric cars together.
Sony and Honda will set up a new brand of electric cars
The two companies have now announced the partnership, but the plans are not 100% complete. For now, Sony and Honda will lay the foundations of a common brand in 2022, and the projections are to bring to market the first electric car under the new brand by 2025.
According to the information currently available, Honda will be responsible for the design, production and launch of the first model, while Sony will be in charge of the mobile service system. Thus, Sony will be the company responsible for an advanced infotainment system, wireless connectivity and sensors installed on the car.
This partnership could also accelerate the development of electric cars under the Honda logo, as the company has so far launched only one model in Europe: the Honda E model:
“Although Sony and Honda are companies that share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of expertise are very different. Thus, I believe that this alliance that brings together the benefits of the two companies offers great possibilities for the future of mobility. “ Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said.
Thus, with this partnership, plans to launch a new car company, Sony Mobility, will probably be canceled. Sony’s electric car technologies have been demonstrated at CES 2021 and 2022 with the Vision-S EV and Vision-S 02 concepts.
