Samsung could be preparing Galaxy S23 phones with slightly increased dimensions compared to the S22 series, and the reason could be a thicker bezel around the screen. It looks like next year’s phones will accentuate the black space on the front a bit, but it’s not exactly clear why Samsung would choose a more “old-fashioned” design instead of going for thinner edges. Still, this isn’t the first time the South Korean manufacturer’s flagship series has received “downgrades” from one generation to the next.
Galaxy S23 could use thicker bezel screens
The source of this information is IceUniverse, a famous Twitter leaker, who published the information along with size specs and with images demonstrating the differences. The base S23 model could increase in size by 0.3mm in length and width, thanks to a 0.15mm thicker bezel around the screen. This could suggest the use of cheaper OLED panels.
Previously the Galaxy S series has received serious downgrades, also in the display department, but also when it comes to device construction. For example, after the Galaxy S10 series, all devices except the Ultra used FullHD+ screens, while previous generations have used QHD screens since the S6. Then the “standard” S21 ditched the glass back in favor of one made of plastic, and then on the S22 made the return to glass.
Small difference between S22 and S23, Samsung widened all four bezels for the S23 by 0.15mm, it looks bulkier than the S22, I can’t understand why Samsung does this, I have to again suspect that there is a spy inside Samsung. pic.twitter.com/KwdelDbHrF

IceUniverse says, however, that even the Ultra model could come with thicker edges, adding 0.1mm in height and 0.2mm in width over the Galaxy S22 Ultra currently. However, we don’t expect the screens used on the company’s flagship series to be thinner than in the past in terms of capabilities, but just to use a cheaper manufacturing process that doesn’t allow for such thin bezels currently.
Curiously though, the screens supplied by Samsung to Apple for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max now have thinner edges.
