Amid all the big titles unveiled in recent weeks is Payday 3 from Starbreeze Studios. The highly anticipated sequel in the cooperative heist shooting series is coming to the Xbox Series X/S, PC and PS5. In a new developer diary, executive producer Craig MacLeod stated that the team is focused on making “all of our releases available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox X and S.”
Of course, there is a reason why the team is skipping the Xbox One and PS4 with the sequel. “The reason is that we realize that to make the best version of the game, we want to be on the latest technology.” It has not yet outlined how the current-generation consoles will help with that, but we will learn more about that in the coming months.
To enable cross-progression, however, players must sign up for Starbreeze Nebula. “By linking our accounts together, we can take a simple first step to enable things like cross-progression, which would otherwise require complicated solutions to work.” It also helps maintain “one community across all platforms instead of dividing people who are essentially all fans of the same game.”
The team acknowledges some reluctance to sign up for a new service, but stresses “we’re here to build something great over a long period of time. And to do that, you have to lay the right technical foundation to achieve that.”
Payday 3 will be released on Sept. 21. For more details on the new mechanisms, such as exchanging hostages to get more time or more opportunities for stealth, check out the first developer diary. In the meantime, stay tuned for more updates.
