Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that he and Tom Cruise are developing an exciting new stunt.
The two first collaborated on Valkyrie in 2008, then McQuarrie did some script revisions for the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Ghost Protocol. This collaboration came at an opportune time for both artists. Ghost Protocol is the film in which Cruise performed the famous stunt in which he ran off the edge of the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai.
Although they also worked together on Edge of Tomorrow, their most fruitful collaboration turned out to be 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. That film, which featured Tom Cruise hanging from an airplane in flight, prompted them both to push their limits in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, 2021’s megahit Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two.
Today on his official Twitter account, McQuarrie responded to a fan question about his collaborations with Tom Cruise. They asked if there were any stunts that he and Tom Cruise wanted to do, but proved impossible to pull off. “On Friday morning, I told Tom that the technology to film a particular stunt just doesn’t exist,” except, “by six o’clock it did.”
What movie might this new Tom Cruise stunt appear in?
While this Tweet is sure to pique the interest of Tom Cruise fans, one frustrating element is that McQuarrie hasn’t revealed exactly which movie the stunt he’s talking about will appear in.
Tom Cruise is currently collaborating on at least four films, including a new action franchise, a musical, and a project with director Tropic Thunder.
We can suspect (or hope) that director Christopher McQuarrie is referring, however, to Mission Impossible.
