Mazda is preparing to launch the CX-60: what we know about the new model

Mazda plans to launch three new electric cars by 2025, with more to follow, and is working on an extended version of its Mazda MX-30 electric car, using the brand’s famous rotary motor technology.

In this last image, the brand teased the interior of the new car showing part of the dashboard. Mazda says the CX-60’s interior has a wide range of ornaments in a variety of materials, including nappa leather and fabrics, along with natural maple wood and contrasting chrome trim. The image also shows a unique stitch pattern, which is inspired by traditional Japanese binding techniques. It is designed to contrast with the modern technology of the new car.

An earlier image of the brand provided a preview of the CX-60 style. In front, the LED light signature extends into the large grid, which is surrounded by a dark ornamental piece. This image also showed some of the carved lines on the hood, suggesting that the CX-60 will take on some of the styling elements of the brand’s other models, such as the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-5.

The Mazda CX-60 will not replace the CX-5, which has just been refurbished by 2022. It may have a similar size, but it is set to stand above the current car. The CX-60 will be joined by a seven-seater Mazda CX-80, which will also have a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Consisting of a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor, Mazda’s plug-in hybrid SUV will have around 300 hp. No electric range figure has been given, but more than 50 kilometers would be needed to keep the CX-60 competitive with rivals, including Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Given that Mazda and Toyota have an ongoing partnership, the CX-60 could have the same engine as the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. It also has a 2.5-liter petrol engine with 302 hp, with an engine at each end to provide four-wheel drive.

The new Mazda CX-60 is set to launch on March 8. The CX-60 will go on sale later this year and will be Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid model.
