Maserati has launched the newest SUV: what the new Grecale brings

Maserati has unveiled the Grecale mid-range SUV, the answer to the Stellantis brand for the Porsche Macan and BMW X3.

Grecale, the second Maserati SUV after the Levante model, will arrive in European representations in the third quarter and in the USA by the end of the year.

It will be available with a regular petrol engine and two mild-hybrid versions. A fully electric version will be released in 2023.

Grecale is sitting on a rebuilt version of the Giorgio platform, which is the basis of the medium-sized SUV Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It will be built alongside Stelvio at the Stellantis plant in Cassino, Italy.

Grecale is named after a northeastern Mediterranean wind, following a long-standing Maserati tradition.

Technical specifications

The most powerful version of the Grecale, the Trophy badge, has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine based on the Nettuno engine used on the Maserati MC20 sports car. It has 523 hp and a maximum torque of 620 newtons meters.

The SUV will also be offered with a choice of two 2.0-liter, four-cylinder mild-hybrid models with 296 hp on the GT version and 325 hp on the Modena version. Both have a maximum torque of 450 newton meters. Mild-hybrid engines use a 48-volt battery, a belt starter and an e-booster.

All three versions of the Grecale are four-wheel drive.

The Trofeo version has a top speed of 285 km / h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. The 2.0-liter versions have a top speed of 240 km / h and a time of 0-100 km / h of 5.3 and 5.6 seconds, respectively.

With a length of 4,847 mm to 4,859 mm, depending on the version, the Grecale is 150 mm shorter than the Levante and 160 mm longer than the Stelvio. Grecale has a wheelbase of 2,901 mm. It is 1,948 mm to 1,979 mm wide and 1,659 mm to 1,670 mm high.

The Modena and Trofeo versions have a 34 mm widened rear wheelbase compared to the GT model, to accentuate their sporty character.

The electric future

The electric battery version, called the Grecale Folgore, will have a 105 kilowatt-hour battery and will provide a torque of up to 800 newton meters. It will have a 400-volt architecture, which is currently used by most battery-powered electric cars.

The all-electric version of the MC20 coupe and other future Maserati will use an 800-volt architecture, which halves recharging times.

Next year Maserati will launch the GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible with all-electric and petrol powertrains.

By 2025, Maserati will unveil successors to the Quattroporte sedan and the Levante SUV. Both will only come as fully electric cars. A fully electric version of the MC20 will also be released by 2025.

Grecale was set to launch in 2021, but Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares delayed the SUV’s arrival.

Tavares said he had postponed the launch “to make sure it is absolutely where it should be in terms of fit and finish, electronics and infotainment.”
