Katie Taylor, who runs her business under her birth name Katie Perry, has won a trademark battle against pop star Katy Perry after the singer sold clothing to Australian customers between 2014 and 2018.
It was alleged that the singer ignored Katie Perry’s trademark, and a federal judge ruled in favor of the fashion designer, stating that Katy Perry’s company Kitty Purry partially infringed on the trademark of the fashion designer’s company.
Damages will be decided at a later date, but it seems that many may see the lighter side, for in her ruling, federal judge Brigitte Markovic said: “This is a story of two women, two teenage dreams and one name.”
Katie Perry believes this is a huge win for small businesses and says: “I not only fought myself, but I fought for small businesses in this country, many of which were started by women, to be able to compete against foreign entities that have much more financial power than we do.”
