The UK is continuing its crackdown on junk food. The new Labour government wants to make some major and questionable changes, such as abolishing the heating allowance for pensioners and banning junk food advertisements from 9 p.m. onwards.
As the BBC reports, the ban will come into effect in October next year and is aimed at tackling childhood obesity. “These restrictions will help protect children from exposure to advertising for less healthy food and drink, which evidence shows influences their dietary preferences from an early age.” wrote Health Minister Andrew Gwynne in a statement in the House of Commons on Thursday.
There is hope that prevention of childhood obesity could reduce the stress it causes on the NHS. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer promised significant reforms to the health service, hoping to focus more on disease prevention within communities to reduce the pressure under which it is placed.
