Imran Jan is dismissed as Prime Minister of Pakistan after opposition motion of no confidence

MADRID, 9 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The opposition has achieved 174 votes in favor of the motion of censure against the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Jan, who is therefore no longer the highest political figure in the country. The Pakistani National Assembly is made up of 342 seats.

Jan is the first Pakistani president dismissed in a motion of censure, according to the Pakistani press, which highlights that before the vote, the president of Parliament, Asad Qaiser, and his vice president, Qasim Suri, have resigned. Qaiser has resigned to “not participate in the foreign conspiracy to remove the prime minister.”

Thus, the session was chaired by Ayaz Sadiq, deputy of the Muslim League of Pakistan-Nawaz (PML-N), who was in charge of announcing the result of the vote. “174 members have registered their votes in favor of the resolution. Consequently, the resolution of the motion of censure against Mr. Imran Jan, Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been approved by majority,” Sadiq announced.

A spokeswoman for the LMP-N, Marriyum Aurangzeb, explained that Sadiq himself could not vote because he was the president and that the dissidents of the Pakistan Tehreek and Insaf (Movement for Justice in Pakistan) led by Jan did not vote either.

After announcing the result, Sadiq gave the floor to Shehbaz Sharif, the opposition’s joint candidate for the post of prime minister. In his speech, he thanked all the opposition leaders and promised that “the new regime will not indulge in revenge.”

“I do not want to return to the bitterness of the past. We want to forget them and move forward. We are not going to take revenge or fall into injustices. We are not going to send people to prison for no reason. The law and justice will take their course,” he stressed, according to collects the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’ in its digital edition.

Then Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, president of the Pakistan People’s Party, took the floor, congratulating the House for the approval of a motion of censure for the first time in the country’s history.

“On April 10, 1973, this House approved the Constitution. On April 10, 1986, Benazir Bhutto ended her exile and returned to Lahore to lead the fight against General Ziaul Haq,” he recalled. “Today is April 10, 2022 and the anti-democratic ballast that we have endured for the last three years returns to the old Pakistan (…). Democracy is the best revenge,” he stressed.

The third great architect of the motion of censure, Khalid Makbul Sidiqui, from the MQM party, stressed that not only should the victory be celebrated, “but also show greatness at this time, since it is more of a test than a reward.”

Sidiqui has asked Parliament to move forward and return the confidence that the opposition leaders have received after the victory of the motion. “We don’t want the old Pakistan. We want a better Pakistan,” he stressed.

The vote follows the decision of the Supreme Court, which annulled the decision to dissolve the National Assembly against Jan’s opinion.

The last few weeks in Pakistan have been characterized by political tension the like of which has not been seen in years, marked by turncoat scandals and massive demonstrations for and against the prime minister, denounced by the opposition alliance of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (MDP). ) as a “puppet” of the Army. The Armed Forces are considered the most powerful establishment in Pakistan since its independence from the British Raj in 1947.
