The Vikings, the British Empire and probably many other historical civilizations that I can’t think of, all had incredible overseas trade routes. How did they manage this? With boats, of course, and sails to carry them along the wind.
Now the company Bar Technologies has begun testing cargo ships with a fixed metal sail. Called the WindWing, it will help reduce carbon emissions from these ships by about 30%, which is a lot to take a step forward for the environment.
They are already installed on the Mitsubishi freighter Pyxis Ocean, where they are described as “revolutionary. I’m not sure that’s the right word, since sails have been around for thousands of years, but it still seems like an environmentally friendly idea.
