How to access Tubi, a free “Netflix” with tens of thousands of good movies and TV shows from Romania

Tubi is a streaming video service similar to Netflix and Disney+, but it’s free. The platform, owned by Fox Corporation, is ad-supported.

The service is only officially available in some areas – North America, much of South America, and Australia – but allows users in the rest of the world who use a VPN service to access content. The platform was available including in the European Union, but went off the market after the introduction of GDPR legislation. Tubi has promised to return to Europe “in the future”.

Fortunately, however, the service can be accessed relatively easily and for free, including from Romania. Users need a VPN, and Switzerland’s ProtonVPN is the perfect free choice. The app, praised by cybersecurity experts, offers access to servers in three countries (the US, the Netherlands and Japan) without speed limits. ProtonVPN is simple to set up and use.

After installing the VPN and connecting to a US server, users need to go, in a web browser, to tubitv.com. There they have unrestricted access to all content on the platform. Of course, there are no Romanian subtitles, but English subtitles can be activated, which are especially useful for older films with poor sound quality.

There are also dedicated Tubi apps, but I haven’t been able to download them from the official stores, even though I set up ProtonVPN on a US server.

Android users can download an apk from various sources. I used Androidapksfree and encountered no security or compatibility issues.

Tubi hosts over 40,000 movies and TV shows from over 250 providers. You’ll find a lot of famous and popular titles there, such as “Aguirre, the Wrath of God”, “The Shining”, “Rambo”, “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”, “Das Boot”, “The Flintstones”, “Midsomer Murders” or “The Nanny”.
