House of the Dragon changes the Targaryen house seal: producer Ryan Condal’s explanation

Ryan Condal, head of House of the Dragon, explains the Targaryen Seal change in the upcoming series.

The Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, will take viewers two centuries back in time, before the events of the original series. The show chronicles the events leading up to the fall of House Targaryen, showcasing the civil war in Dance of the Dragons.

House of the Dragon was filmed between April 2021 and February 2022, with the 10-episode first season set to premiere on HBO on August 21, 2022.

Although House of the Dragon is a series that remains faithful to Martin’s books as well as the original series, the prequel series has introduced a few changes.

For example, House Velaryon undergoes changes, and the relationship between Corlys (Steve Toussaint) and Vaemond Velaryon (Wil Johnson) is also different. The stories of Ser Harrold Westerling (Graham McTavish) and King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) have apparently been altered, presumably to give the characters more prominence.

In addition, the Throne of Fie now looks bigger and more imposing, but this change was explained in season 2 of Game of Thrones already.

What Ryan Condal had to say about House Targaryen’s seal change in House of the Dragon

“I will say that every choice we made in this new series was made for a reason. I would say stay tuned. But I will also say that the seal you see in this series has been shown before.

The truth is, you might get the impression that you’ve seen the Targaryen seal before in Game of Thrones, but it’s actually not that much present Game of Thrones. You’ve seen it in books and stuff like that. So much had the Targaryen dynasty fallen that the seal didn’t really exist until Daenerys brought it back. So we chose to go down a path that I think is honorable, which is where Daenerys left us, as opposed to where people think it all started. I’ll say this much, stay tuned. Hopefully it will all make sense in time,” Condal said.
