The Play Store, the store for apps, music, movies, books and just about every other type of digital content Google sells, turns 10. To mark the occasion, the company is updating the store’s logo, with one that’s in tune with Google’s new interface design directions, like the new Material You, as well as to better align with other recently updated logos, like the one for Google Chrome. Basically, it remains decorated in blue, yellow green and red, but their shades are a bit more intense and the corners of the “play” button more rounded.
Google Play Store replaced the old Android Market 10 years ago
Even though the Android operating system has been on the market since 2008, the Play Store debuted a few years later. It was basically a complete rebranding of the Android Market, which was previously the go-to source for smartphone apps. What Android Market didn’t offer was anything other than apps and video games.
“We’re introducing a new logo that reflects the magic of Google and aligns with the branding used on many of our products that help customers – Search, Assistant, Photos, Gmail, etc.”, said Tian Lim, VP of Google Play. “A decade later, more than 2.5 billion people in 190 countries use Google Play every month to discover apps, games and digital content. And more than 2 million developers work with us to build their businesses and reach people around the globe.”, Lim continued.
The Google Play Store’s 10-year anniversary also comes with a surprise for users. Those who collect Google Play Points will receive a “booster,” which will increase the number of points earned based on purchases by 10 times for a limited time.
