Global Esports Federation announces new executive team to lead ‘GEF 5.0’ strategy

The Global Esports Federation (GEF), the international governing body of the sector, has officially presented its new executive teammarking a significant change in staffing in preparation for their ‘GEF 5.0’ strategy to be developed over the period 2024 to 2028.

This leadership renewal is part of a series of key updates that the GEF is implementing in its organizational structure in order to achieve its ambitious strategic objectives. Members of the executive team will lead different strategic divisions within the federation. The newly appointed executives include Rustam Aghasiyev as Chief of Staff, Mark Chay as Chief Development Officer, Mario Cilenti as Chief Operating Officer, Eric F. Brinkley as Executive Director of Programs and Content, and Thanos Karagrounas as Chief Impact Officer.

The appointed members have previous track records within the federation and bring valuable combined esports and sports experience. Among them are individuals who have worked for renowned organizations such as the International Olympic Committee (Karagrounas), the Singapore Swimming Association (Chay) and ESL (Brinkley).

The initiative ‘GEF 5.0’ focuses on large-scale innovation in areas such as portfolio development, business growth and strategic alliances. The strategy, introduced at the end of 2023, aims to. boost the use of esports as a medium and support its development globally.

Founded in 2019, the GEF works to promote the credibility and legitimacy of esports through strategic partnerships and foster an inclusive and healthy ecosystem. In addition, the federation organizes the Global Esports Games, an annual tournament that takes place in December.

During 2023, the GEF has undergone numerous developments, including expanding its global reach with the creation of the Esports Federation of Oceania and the Esports Development Federation of Europe. It has also signed agreements with the International Esports Federation and the Esports Federation of Azerbaijan to undertake joint initiatives for growth in the sector.
