MADRID, 14 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The European-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, Eurolat, has opted this Thursday to strengthen supply chains and food security, while seeking new alternative suppliers to Russia in the context of the war.

At the end of the 14th edition of the parliamentary assembly between deputies from both continents, held in Buenos Aires, the Spanish MEP Javi López and the Colombian congressman Óscar Darío Pérez, both co-presidents of EuroLat, have prepared a joint statement in which they denounce the ” illegal, unprovoked and unjustified military aggression and invasion committed by Russia against Ukraine”.

In these, they have advocated for the definitive cessation of hostilities using diplomatic channels, at the same time that they have stressed the need to implement humanitarian corridors so that the aid reaches all the points of the Ukrainian territory where there is a civilian population in need, to which must also be protected.

During the closing of the plenary session, a video was shown by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, in which she stressed that “the attack against Ukraine is an attack against everything we believe in” and that “it represents the values exactly opposite to those in which the EuroLat Assembly was founded and for which it works”.

Along the same lines, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has remarked that the war “has made Europeans agree on the need for a geopolitical Europe”, something that will not be achieved if the old continent “is not close to Latin America”. “Together we can be a decisive force in world governance,” he said.

Another aspect reflected in the joint declaration, beyond the war in Eastern Europe, is the challenge of economic and social recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, which they have advocated because it is “comprehensive”. In addition, they have defended the need to “promote equality and the rights of women and girls” in light of the increase in cases of gender-based violence during the pandemic.

Beyond this, López and Pérez have highlighted that this recovery must go hand in hand with the promotion of the energy transition towards renewable energies, thus creating new opportunities for investment and employment, always in accordance with the realities of each country.

Finally, the EuroLat joint statement points to the search for a peaceful, fair and lasting solution in relation to the Malvinas Islands, within the framework of the United Nations resolutions.
