Queen Elizabeth II’s former communications director Sally Osman said Monday that the monarch did not agree with Brexit, the UK’s exit from the EU.
“I don’t think so,” Osman said with a chuckle when questioned about it on U.S. broadcaster CNN and after being presented with news of the queen’s alleged backing for Brexit.
The British press has speculated widely about Elizabeth II’s stance on Brexit, but the queen was known for her extreme caution when it came to showing her personal views in public, particularly political ones.
The deep blue dress chosen for the opening of Parliament in 2017 sparked speculation about her support for the EU, but she never openly took a position.
