Apple has praised the camera on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in presentations, and in our tests the underlying hardware has proven to be a very capable one. But now it’s time to take a look at the “scientific” results from DxOMark. It looks like Apple wasn’t exaggerating when it said this is one of the best cameras on a smartphone yet, with the new flagship iPhone 14 Pro coming in a close second in the DxO rankings.
The iPhone 14 Pro’s 48-megapixel camera delivers a big performance boost
According to DxOMark, only one other phone can take better photos than the iPhone 14 Pro, and that’s the Honor Magic4 Ultimate, the model that had already been leading the rankings for months. While that one might take better photos, it looks like the iPhone is still the “champion” of shooting. Even though the Honor includes “IMAX” technology for capturing in LOG format over which you can apply LUT color profiles, the iPhone still outperforms it.
The iPhone 14 Pro’s advantages are especially in the areas of stabilization, HDR recording, precise focusing on moving subjects, and bringing the on-screen photo or video closer to the final recorded result. Incidentally, the iPhone has greater consistency between frames, whereas other models fail to capture two similar frames in the same way one after the other.
Also, the front-facing camera on the iPhone 14 Pro is now considered the best on the market being just one notch above the Huawei P50 Pro. Apple won thanks to new focus in both the photo and video chapters.
Image noise in some scenarios is noticeable on both the rear and front cameras, but DxOMark praises the bokeh effect achieved on the cameras’ portrait mode, which has a natural, DSLR-like look.
Thus, the iPhone 14 Pro’s final scores in DxOMark remain at 146 for the rear camera (aggregate of 143 on photo and 149 on video) and 145 for the front camera (139 photo/154 video).
