Developer lets Windows and AI tool grow together

More than ten million people use ChatGPT every day. No internet platform has ever grown as fast as OpenAI’s chatbot AI. It only took the company two months to surpass 100 million users.

Despite the high popularity, there is currently no way around a browser to call up the chatbot. So far there is no official app or widget for PC users – this will change soon.

Microsoft’s PowerToys will soon integrate ChatGPT plugin

A new ChatGPT plugin for PowerToys allows users to use the chatbot without opening the browser. The plugin is currently in an early stage of development and is expected to be available shortly.

Once completed, users can ask ChatGPT questions about PowerToys Run with a keyboard shortcut directly from the desktop.

The plugin integration is done through PowerToys Run, an open source tool collection for Windows that contains many useful features that can increase your productivity. You can download the useful program from the Microsoft Store.

Powertoys contains numerous useful tools, such as a system-wide color picker or an image resizer that is integrated directly into the context menu.

It’s very ironic that the PowerToys comes from Microsoft itself and will soon have ChatGPT integration for the desktop. This will make it much easier to access the OpenAI chatbot than is currently the case with the Bing AI assistant. Maybe Microsoft will follow suit soon and integrate it on Windows 11 desktops?

The developer behind the new plugin is Simone Franco, who also developed WSA Tools – a tool that makes sideloading Android apps on Windows 11 easier.

To use the plugin, you need your own OpenAI API key. The project is still in an early phase and the UI is not finalized yet. Franco invited users to contribute via GitHub or share their thoughts on development.

How often do you use ChatGPT and do you wish there were easier ways to access the chatbot? Do you think Microsoft will be integrating the Bing AI more tightly into Windows any time soon? And if you already have experience with both chatbots: How has your experience been with both of them so far and is there a clear winner for you? Tell us in the comments!
