Consumer Affairs recalls several lots of sausages for possible presence of listeria

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has warned of the presence of ‘Listeria monocytogenes’ in several batches of sausages from the AIA and Pavo brands. This alert has been notified in the framework of an outbreak of listeriosis in Italy and other European countries, although for the moment there is no knowledge of associated cases in Spain, as detailed by the AESAN, belonging to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

The affected products are from the Wudy brandof the manufacturer AIA, y Hot Dog from Turkey.

The agency recommends that persons who have at home the products included in this alert refrain from consuming them and return them to the point of purchase.

What is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by the consumption of food contaminated with the bacterium ‘Listeria monocytogenes’. It is estimated that 1600 people contract listeriosis each year in Spain and that approximately 260 die from the disease, according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults 65 years of age or older, and persons with weakened immune systems.

This alert has been notified in the context of a outbreak of listeriosis in Italy. However, the AESAN has indicated that there is no record in Spain of no cases reported or associated with this alert.
