Avowed won’t get 60FPS support on the Xbox Series X/S – That’s Gaming

From Redfall to Starfield to Forza Motorsport, a number of major first-party Xbox titles have attracted controversy in recent months for their failure to support a 60 FPS frame rate on the Xbox Series X/S, and it seems another game has been added to that list.

During a recent conversation on the Iron Lords podcast, Matt Hansen, Avowed’s art director, revealed that the upcoming action-RPG will not support 60 FPS on consoles. According to Hansen, the nature of the game as a single-player, first-person title makes the 30 FPS target ideal for the game and for the development team.

“It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need those 60 frames,” Hansen said (transcription via VGC). “And that allows us to get much juicier with VFX and lighting and all that other stuff.

“It’s a trade-off we made relatively early on, and we’re very happy with that. The game runs pretty smoothly for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal.”

Microsoft has often maintained that both the Xbox Series X and Series S are capable of delivering 60 FPS gameplay comfortably (if not more), so the continued failure of even first-party titles to meet that goal at launch will certainly be a disappointment. Whether Avowed will add that option in a post-launch update, as other first-party Microsoft titles have done, remains to be seen.

Avowed will launch on Feb. 11, 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
