Avatar 2 – The Way of Water, how good is the new film: ‘The Way of Water’ made waves after its first weekend in cinemas

After a wait of some 13 years, Avatar 2 has arrived in cinemas, and people flocked to see The Way of Water as James Cameron envisioned it, on the big screen. Which is the story told by the box office of the most anticipated film of 2022.

According to early statistics, Avatar: The Way of Water, or “The Way of the Water” as the Romanians call it, has topped $400 million in global box office receipts after grossing $180 million in every corner of the globe on Friday alone.

How good is Avatar 2 from the box office

According to Disney estimates published by Deadline, Outside of U.S. box office, Avatar The Way Water is grossing 83% more after its first three days in theaters than the first film in the series. The Way Water is 69% ahead of Top Gun: Maverick if we take the first weekend on the big screen as a reference, 59% ahead of the Jurassic World Dominion release and 39% behind Spider-Man: No Way Home.

On paper, Avatar 2 didn’t necessarily line up with the pundits’ predictions, coming in a bit below expectations, but there were some pleasant surprises. In Korea, from Friday to Saturday, the number of people who went to see The Way of the Water increased by 94%, for a local total of 17.3 million. Even in China it grossed 44 million at the cinema. For reference, being distributed in China is a huge win for Avatar and James Cameron, and a major source of profit for the Disney / 20th Century Studios production.

Looking at major markets outside the US, Avatar 2 had the second most profitable India release for a Hollywood film after Avengers: Endgame. In the UK it had the fourth most profitable release on a Friday since 2022. In Spain, it placed second in Friday box office after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
