Avatar 2 has reached the safe zone: what it’s grossing and what it means for future films

The newest blockbuster to come from James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water, has officially grossed enough to enter the safe zone.

Specifically, The Way of Water ticked off $1 billion internationally and managed to beat Black Panther: Wakanda Forever by $440 million, which is no surprise since it earned half a billion dollars after only one week in theaters.

The Avatar: Path of Water phenomenon is unstoppable

If it keeps this up, Avatar: The Way of Water should be able to cross the $2 billion mark, a new milestone for Cameron and his team.

Avatar: The Way of Water is on track to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time, based on its earnings. It has already passed Avengers: Age of Ultron (which earned $1.403 billion) and Frozen II (which earned $1.45 billion).

After Top Gun: Maverick became the #1 movie of 2022, the Avatar sequel has a chance to break that record, though not necessarily for 2022.

With three more Avatar sequels in development, Avatar: The Way of Water aimed to break some box office records to make the production worthwhile, financially.

The good news is that the next Avatar films have a real chance of becoming hugely successful in their own right. In light of the money made so far, it seems that the effort to create sequels is not for nothing. James Cameron has gambled dangerously, but he has won, as far as we can see.

It should be remembered that Avatar 3 was filmed in parallel with Avatar 2, so we may be in for more surprises in the coming period.

However, until Avatar 3 is released, let’s enjoy a little more of the present. If you haven’t seen The Water Path by now, find out that it’s playing in cinemas right now.
