ASUS has officially announced the new ROG Phone 6D and 6D Ultimate, different versions from those originally announced two months ago. The new variants keep most of the exterior design elements, but change a few things on the inside, and the most important new element is the processor. Instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets, the ROG Phone 6D adopts the new MediaTek Dimensity 9000+, the main rival to the Snadpragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Android phone market.
New ROG Phone 6D models benefit from new processors and a new cooling system
For the most part, we’re dealing with the same devices, with large 6.78″ OLED screens and 165 Hz refresh rate, the same 50 megapixel main camera, 13 megapixel ultrawide and 5 megapixel macro cameras, a 12 megapixel selfie camera and large 6,000 mAh battery with 65W charging. The exterior shape is the same, while the accessories on the ROG Phone 6 will also fit on the two new 6D variants. And even the RGB lights and OLED display on the back of the phones are the same.
The two models use the same MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset, but in slightly different configurations. The standard model includes up to 16GB RAM and up to 256GB storage, while the ultimate variant reaches 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The Ultimate also comes with the AeroCool system bundled, while the ROG Phone 6D doesn’t have it as standard. It is available for purchase separately.
Differences occur in the use of the new chipset and a new AeroActive Portal cooling system on the 6D Ultimate. This is an air channel with a motorised cover that opens to allow better flow for air circulation when you connect the AeroActive Cooler 6 system to the back of the device. This should make cooling more efficient, with warm air having a clear path to exit the device, being pulled by the fan and dissipated outside the case.
Prices for the new ROG Phone 6D models start at £799 in the UK for the “standard” 6D and £1,199 for the 6D Ultimate variant. The external cooler costs an extra £90.
