Apple is already testing 9 Mac models with M2 processors. The launch will take place soon

The wait for the new computer models equipped with Apple’s M2 processors could be shorter than we expected. Even though we recently received a new model equipped with M1 processors, Mac Studio, it seems that Apple is already testing M2 processors on multiple hardware versions, from the most modest to the most powerful. According to Bloomberg, there are already nine different models of computers with Apple Silicon M2 processors in testing. An autumn release seems imminent.

The entire MacBook range will switch to Apple M2 processors

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who bases his article on data from software developers who have detected new hardware being used alongside their applications, Apple plans to launch M2 processors across the full range of products it sells. The original M1 processor debuted in the fall of 2020 and is still used on most of the company’s computers. In 2022, it could be replaced with the M2, starting with Apple’s cheapest laptop: the MacBook Air.

It has been rumored for a long time that the MacBook Air will receive a new design with the transition to M2, and this transition could take place in just a few months. It seems that Apple will keep in the offer an “entry” model for the Pro series, also with M2. It will replace the current 13 ”MacBook Pro. In addition, Apple is testing four new MacBook Pro models, with the M2 Pro and M2 Max models, two Mac Mini models (with M1 Pro and M2 Pro) and a desktop Mac Pro. The latter would use a “successor” to the m1 Ultra chip, which is currently only available on Mac Studio.

The new processors will be equipped with more cores

According to new information, the Apple M2 processor will be “upgraded” not only in terms of efficiency, frequency and the higher number of instructions it can calculate per cycle, but also in terms of the number of cores. The standard model will use 10 CPU cores, two more than the “standard” M1. M2 Max will have even more cores for the CPU, but also for the GPU, compared to the current generation: 12 + 38 cores. We have 2 more CPU cores than the M1 Max and six GPU cores.

The only models absent from the list of those tested with M2 seem to be the iMac, which was launched last year with the M1, as well as the new Mac Studio. However, given how recent this model is, Apple will probably wait until it offers a configuration upgrade.

Gurman says at least two of these models are expected to debut this summer. Given that the WWDC conference has been confirmed for June 6, we can expect at least an announcement of the new processors at the event, if not a complete announcement of the computers that will integrate them.
