The Algerian Minister of Justice, Abderrachid Tabi, has arrived this Tuesday in Morocco with the aim of personally delivering an invitation to King Mohamed VI to attend the Arab League summit to be hosted by Algeria in early November.
Tabi was received by Moroccan Foreign Minister Naser Burita, who accepted the invitation on behalf of the monarch. This is the first high-level visit since the two countries broke off diplomatic relations in August 2021.
Algiers broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat in August 2021 citing a host of circumstances, among which it cited the lack of progress in resolving the open dispute over Western Sahara.
Since then, the geopolitical situation in the Maghreb has added new tensions, with no signs of rapprochement between the Moroccan and Algerian authorities. Morocco considered its diplomatic crisis with Spain settled after the government of Pedro Sanchez endorsed Mohamed VI’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a turn of events that led Algeria to recall its ambassador in Madrid for consultations.
