Mercedes is keeping an eye on Romania: what it wants to invest in, how it helps us

Romania has the opportunity to become a hub for the electric car industry.

The German company Mercedes-Benz proposes a refurbishment and the transition to the production of electrical parts at its industrial plants in Sebeș and Cugir.

The German car company announces that it will launch a repair program, based on which the public administration received state aid of 35 million euros for the use of the hardware.

Mercedes has two facilities in Romania: Star Assembly in Sebeș and Star Transmission in Cugir, where it has so far invested 320 million euros.

Both organizations produced automatic gearboxes and other components for Mercedes-Benz and, within two years, at this time, created crossover variants. Together, the two organizations have a turnover of 1.5 billion euros and rank third in the position of Romanian exporters after Dacia and Ford.

But it is not the only company that wants to develop components for electric cars.

Good times for Mercedes

Draxlmaier announces that it will invest 200 million euros in a battery factory in Timișoara, while Varta is considering Romania to develop a battery factory, for an alleged investment of one billion euros. RockTech is also investing 400 million euros in a lithium powder treatment plant.

Mercedes-Benz has depleted its stock of electric cars as tight supply chains make it difficult for the carmaker to keep up with growing demand, said CEO Ola Kallenius.

The official explained that the premium car manufacturer is struggling to keep up with the demand on the electric car market, admitting, like Volkswagen’s rivals, that the assembly of vehicles for the next months is already “sold-out”.

In fact, Kallenius stated at the Financial Times Future of the Car 2022 conference that “this is largely true for us as well.”
