Circle appoints CFTC alumnus as General Counsel

Circlestablecoin issuer USDChas hired Heath Tarbertformer president of the Commodity Futures Trading Commissionto the position of legal director.

This Thursday, the crypto fintech Circle has announced the appointment of Heath Tarbert to the position of legal and business manager. The former official will take up his new post on July 1.

Heath Tarbert has held a variety of roles within American institutions. In particular, he was President of the CFTCthe federal agency responsible for regulating commodity exchanges, but also Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury for International Markets. For the past 2 years, the 46-year-old lawyer had been working for Citadel Securities as General Counsel.

I have long been intrigued by Jeremy Allaire’s vision of transferring money securely at the speed of the Internet and Circle’s tangible achievements as a respected and trusted global leader in payments with a regulatory-first approach,” commented the new General Counsel in a statement.

Heath Tarbert succeeds Flavia NavesCircle’s General Counsel. According to Circle’s founder and CEO, he will contribute to the company’s international expansion.

Last March, Circle announced plans to expand its operations in Europe with France in its sights. The Boston-based firm also issues EUROC, a stablecoin backed by the euro.

“As we continue to build a bridge between traditional finance and Web3, Heath’s perspective, legal acumen and global regulatory experience will help us advance the utility value of USDC worldwide,” trumpeted Jeremy Allaire.

The change at Circle comes at a time when US regulators, including the CFTC, are tightening the screws on the crypto. This week, the SEC, another securities agency, launched proceedings against Binance and Coinbase.
