The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila, has asked the Mexican state prosecutor, Ricardo Carpio, to appoint a special prosecutor to lead “an elite group” to investigate the murder of journalists Lourdes Maldonado and Margarito Martínez so that their cases are “resolved as soon as possible”.

Ávila reiterated to the families of the journalists murdered in Tijuana less than a week apart that “they are not alone” and have their “support” and “solidarity,” according to the newspaper ‘Milenio’.

In protest against the murder, journalists gathered in Chilpancingo, in the state of Guerrero, to demand justice from the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and prevent the alleged responsibility of former Baja California governor Jaime Bonilla from being dismissed.

Maldonado was murdered on Sunday, days after announcing that she had won a lawsuit against Bonilla after nine years in court. Maldonado, with almost 50 years of career, worked for Bonilla in his company Primer Sistema de Noticias (PSN) and filed the lawsuit against the former governor for unfair dismissal and outstanding payroll debts.

As a result of these conflicts, Maldonado, who had asked López Obrador for help because “he feared for his life”, was under the protection protocol for journalists of the Government of Baja California and had a panic button on his mobile phone.
