Android 14 will display another low battery alert

Android users already know about the 20%, 10% battery level warning respectively. Starting with Android 14 version we will also have a “desperate” alert, requesting urgent power device connection.

Building on the idea that Android device battery life has increased enough in recent years that users have come to rely on even the last few percent of battery displayed, Google is introducing a new “Very low battery” notification alert. Implemented from Android version 14 onwards, this will only appear when the battery charge level drops to 2%, giving users one last chance to initiate the charging process before forcibly shutting down the device.

Except that, depending on the “optimization” made by the manufacturer, the 2% battery charge level can reflect in less than 2 minutes run time, up to more than an hour. Even longer if the phone is left running in stand-by mode.

Unfortunately, Google doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to implement other features requested by more experienced users, such as the option to stop charging at a “safe” level to protect the battery. For example, Samsung already allows capping charging at 85%, more than doubling battery longevity for users who use their phone heavily but still have the option to recharge frequently.

Until the official release announcement, enthusiastic users can try out the Android 14 test versions only with Google-designated devices: the Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 6 & 6 Pro, Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 & 7 Pro.
