Avatar 2, hotter than Titanic, but James Cameron doesn’t mind: what other records did The Waterway break

The numbers for Avatar: The Way of Water are growing by the eye, and now the film has broken another record previously held, also by James Cameron, with Titanic.

The film represents James Cameron’s return to the barrier-breaking 2009 film and continues the story of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). The two struggle to protect their family from the humans who are returning to Pandora.

According to Variety, Avatar: The Way of Water has now topped $1.538 billion, taking on Titanic in the United States.

While it hasn’t yet surpassed Titanic’s worldwide box office total, it doesn’t have far to go, needing to earn just $20 million more to surpass that milestone, which it should easily be able to do within the next week.

How high can The Way of Water go?

It seems less likely that Avatar: The Way of Water will climb above #3 in the worldwide charts, though.

However, this is still an amazing achievement, as it is now one of only six films to ever earn over $2 billion worldwide.

Cameron warned that the film would have to become one of the biggest of all time to receive the promised sequels, and lo and behold, it far exceeded that margin.

Which means Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 are on track for release on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026 respectively.

The films will continue to explore the wondrous world of Pandora, including the story of the Na’vi tribe. It has also been promised that Avatar 5 could explore the futuristic earth that the character played by Worthington left behind.

What’s more, Avatar 2 has a real chance of going home with an Oscar this year, since it received a nomination in the Best Picture category, among others.
