Tomb Rider could be back: in what form, where you might see it

Hollywood seems to have missed the Tomb Raider opportunity, but that’s okay, because the franchise could be turned into a TV series soon.

Hollywood Reporter sources have revealed that Amazon is reportedly planning to create a series based on the Tomb Raider idea for Prime Video, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge set to executive produce and also write the script.

It’s not certain who will star in the new Tomb Rider, but we certainly shouldn’t pin our hopes on Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander, as the chances of either of them reprising the role of Lara Croft are pretty slim.

However, this news is, for the moment, in source form, since Amazon has not given any official statement on the possibility of a future Tomb Rider series for Prime Video.

The success of The Last of Us seems to have spurred Amazon to follow the recipe

This rumor has appeared alongside other game-based series that are currently in the spotlight. HBO’s The Last of Us has already been successful enough to ensure it will get at least a second season.

For its part, Sony is readying God of War, Gran Turismo and Horizon for Netflix and Prime Video.

A Tomb Raider series would strengthen Amazon’s catalog on the subject of adaptations after games and send the giant into direct competition with “big boy leagues” like Netflix, for example.

Moreover, Amazon is betting heavily on blockbusters. The company spent $1 billion on The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power, and this is just one example.

While a Tomb Raider series doesn’t seem likely to get that kind of production revenue, Waller-Bridge’s involvement suggests that Amazon might be poised to make a splash. It all seems uncertain at this point.

It remains to be seen, however, to what extent Tomb Rider will take the form of a television series on Amazon Prime Video and, more importantly, if that were to happen, how it will be received by audiences.
