Borrell calls on China to use its influence on Russia to end war in Ukraine

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, met this Wednesday with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, with whom he shared Europe’s expectations for China to use its influence on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly being held these days in New York, Borrell and Wang discussed the “destabilizing effects” worldwide of Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the effects on Human Rights, according to a statement released by the office of the High Representative.

However, Borrell raised the “precarious situation” surrounding the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, stressing to Wang that a nuclear accident “could happen at any moment”, while underlining the importance of discussing “as a matter of priority” how to avoid a nuclear crisis.

“High Representative Borrell and Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed Human Rights issues, including the convening of an EU-China Human Rights Dialogue to discuss issues of concern,” reads the missive shared by Borrell’s office.
