Washington sees new dynamics in Ukraine war

The U.S. government has signaled that there could be a new dynamic in the Ukrainian war following successes by Ukrainian troops in the east of the country, where they have recaptured part of the Kharkov region after a retreat by the Ukrainian Army.

This was announced by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, who assured that “what you are seeing is certainly a change in the momentum of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

“Clearly, we have seen the Russians evacuate, withdraw or disengage from their defensive positions, particularly there inside (in the northeast of the country) and around the Kharkov region,” said the Pentagon spokesman at a press conference at the White House.

Kirby stressed that, at least in the Donbas, “there is a sense of momentum on the part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” although he stressed that it is up to Ukraine’s president, Volodimir Zelenski, to ultimately decide whether, militarily, a tipping point has been reached.

However, he pointed out that he does not claim to speak on behalf of the Russian Army, while recalling that Russia has called its strategy of withdrawing troops from the front with Ukraine “repositioning”.

U.S. President Joe Biden has also admitted that it was difficult to say to what extent the recent Ukrainian advances had marked a turning point in the war, recalling that Ukraine still has “a long way to go.”
