Piñera bets on “a new and good Constitution” after voting in the Chilean plebiscite

Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera has defended the need for “a new and good Constitution” after voting in the referendum on the draft Constitution prepared by the Convention, although he did not clarify whether he voted for or against this particular text.

“We have a commitment for a new and good Constitution, and we will fulfill that commitment,” he said in statements to the press.

Piñera went to vote at 9 a.m. with his wife, Cecilia Morel, and three grandchildren at the San Francisco Del Alba School in Las Condes, Santiago de Chile, and called for unity and participation.

“I call on all my compatriots to get up and go to vote with joy, with hope, because the best of Chile is still ahead, and that is why we cannot bluff our country, our wonderful country,” he said.

Former presidents Ricardo Lagos and Eduardo Frei, as well as former president Michelle Bachelet, one of the most determined supporters of the new constitutional text, have also voted.
