Kremlin calls EU suspension of visa agreement “ridiculous” Russia

Latest news on the war pitting Russia and Ukraine against each other.

The Kremlin has dismissed as “ridiculous” the EU’s decision to suspend the visa agreement with Russia, claiming that it will make the arrangements “more difficult” for both Russian and European citizens.

“We cannot say for sure what will happen, but it will be longer and more difficult (to obtain visas),” Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has warned in press statements, according to TASS news agency.

For Moscow, “it is another ridiculous decision in a series of continuing absurdities,” so retaliation is not ruled out. Asked whether Russia will also impose some kind of restraint, Peskov replied, “Moscow will take the course that best serves its interests.”

The measure agreed on Wednesday by the EU-27 to restrict visas for Russian tourists will mean a significant reduction in the number of entry permits and more hurdles in obtaining them. The suspension of the visa facilitation agreement has ended up being the meeting point between member states calling for a total ban on Russian entry to the EU, such as the Baltics, and those calling for more selectivity.
