Macron warns of “end of abundance” in the face of Europe’s energy and climate crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Wednesday of the “end of abundance” as a result of the energy crisis in Europe, disruptions in the supply chain and the impact of the prolonged drought plaguing the European continent.

“At bottom, we are living the end of abundance: that of liquidity without cost, that of products and technologies that seemed perpetually available to us (and) the disruption of value chains (…) We will have arrangements to make,” he said.

In this regard, the French president noted that water shortages have been felt this summer before the great wave of fires that Europe is experiencing, so he thanked firefighters and farmers for their work in the face of these natural disasters, as reported by the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’.

Macron also cited the challenges facing the country, beyond “the climate crisis and its consequences”, as “new risks”, including cybernetic, as well as the crisis of universal values in the international environment, which has put in check concepts such as democracy or human rights.

“The rise of illiberal regimes, the strengthening of authoritarian regimes, and we have seen it again in the uninhibited speeches of recent months, are clear,” Macron explained, as picked up by the BFMTV channel.

“We must respond with seriousness and credibility. Let’s not give in to demagogy,” the French leader warned, adding that the regime of freedom in France “has a cost” that may require sacrifices.
