US responds to EU proposal to revive nuclear deal, which Iran is already considering

The United States has responded to the European Union on EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell’s final text proposal to revive the Iran nuclear deal, a response already being studied by Iranian authorities.

“I can confirm that we have received the response from the United States and we have transmitted it to Iran,” EU foreign spokeswoman Nabila Massrali confirmed to Europa Press.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price also announced the conclusion of the “review” of the draft and the sending of a response to the EU, which in turn has forwarded it to Tehran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, has pointed out that they are already examining it, so they postpone any assessment until they have concluded this work, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Borrell’s proposal is the latest move to reach a new deal, after the nuclear pact eventually collapsed following former President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to take Washington off the negotiating table in 2018.

Stakeholders have been closely watching the next U.S. move, after the EU announced that it had received a “reasonable” response from Iran to its proposal a week ago.

World powers have spent nearly 18 months trying to negotiate a deal that would restore strict limits on Iran’s nuclear activity in exchange for the United States relaxing some of its sanctions on the Persian republic’s economy, including that imposed on its oil exports.
