Anthony Hopkins launches NFTs: what’s in “The Eternal Collection”

Sir Anthony Hopkins has shocked the digital universe: he wants to turn his work into non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

As Variety reports, the “Silence of the Lambs” star is launching a line called “The Eternal Collection” that places his most famous roles in archetypes like “The Hero,” “The Lover” and “The Magician.”

While it’s incredibly odd that an 84-year-old movie star is releasing NFTs, details of the collection, scheduled to be released next month on OpenSea by Orange studio Comet Web3, sound and look pretty good.

For the most expensive level of NFT, Variety notes, one lucky bidder will receive an animated GIF of all ten tarot archetypes, along with framed physical posters chosen by the actor, an “intimate lunch/brunch” with him, and an autographed book featuring his original art.

Anthony Hopkins entered the NFT universe

During a digital press conference, Hopkins both waxed poetic about the possibilities of digital art and joked about the less-than-artistic side of much of the work populating the digital scene.

“The barrier to launching NFTs is so low,” the octogenarian said during the press conference. “There’s a lot of junk in NFT. The strong will survive, make no mistake. Web3 and blockchain technology is changing the game.”

“NFTs are a blank canvas to create art in a new format,” he added. “I’m probably the oldest in the NFT community and on social media, which shows that anything is possible at any age.”

This isn’t the “Meet Joe Black” legend’s first foray into NFT. Earlier this summer, Hopkins tweeted and asked fellow NFT aficionados Jimmy Fallon, Reese Witherspoon and Snoop Dogg where to start.

At the time, Futurism.com noted that Hopkins’ talent agency, CAA, had put the actor on notice about the launch because the group is an investor in the OpenSea marketplace – the very same ones the actor will now sell through his own collection, though according to the press conference, all proceeds will go to a charity of the actor and his wife’s choice.

In light of this, it is not known whether Sir Anthony’s “The Eternal Collection” is a genuine passion project or one that his agency has urged him towards.
