“Nope” is on a roll: why you need to see the newest sci-fi thriller, directed by Jordan Peele

“Nope,” directed by Jordan Peele, debuted at the top of the North American weekend box office with $44 million.

The sci-fi thriller grossed $68 million, according to Variety.

Director Peele worked with “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya, along with Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun, on the story of brothers who live in California and try to capture video evidence of a UFO.

Writing, directing and producing Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele has become a master of modern horror, beautifully undermining the pillars that horror fans have relied on for decades. Nope could be considered the witty third film in that trilogy and stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun.

Absolutely nothing is known about Nope’s story, but the first poster for the film depicts a strange-looking cloud hovering over a small, remote mountain village, trailing a creepy banner of flags behind it. You get what you want from this. Regardless, Peele’s reputation, the project’s intense secrecy, and a super weird title give Nope major buzz ahead of its 2022 release.

For reference, Disney’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” dropped to #2 after two weeks in the #1 spot. The Marvel film added $22.1 million (a 53% drop) from 4,370 locations, with domestic grosses reaching $276.2 million. Worldwide, the fourth Thor film grossed $598 million and will cross the $600 million mark.

Also, another Universal film, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” took third place with $17.7 million from 3,816 theaters. After four weeks on the big screen, the animated family film earned $297.8 million in North America and $640.2 million worldwide.
