Xiaomi prepares to launch MIX Fold 2, a foldable model with a very thin body

Xiaomi is preparing to offer an alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold4, which is to be officially announced today, August 10. The Chinese brand’s launch event is even scheduled for tomorrow, August 11, in China, where the company will unveil the MIX Fold 2, which looks to be the thinnest foldable phone model on the market. Early images of it suggest that each half is only slightly thicker than a simple USB-C plug.

MIX Fold 2 will be one of many foldable models released this period

While it’s been pretty “quiet” in the foldable device market over the last half year, with only Huawei bringing a new model, the Mate Xs 2, to market, the next couple of days are set to see no less than four new models. Two will come from Samsung, with the new Flip and Fold variants, while the other two will be presented by Chinese companies. Lenovo will launch the Razr 2022, a competitor to the Flip4, under the Motorola brand, and Xiaomi is coming with an alternative to the Fold4 in the form of the MIX Fold 2.

If the Galaxy Z Fold models so far have opted for a less-than-compact design, with each foldable half similar in thickness to a regular smartphone, the phone looking like two Galaxy S’s stacked on top of each other from the side, Xiaomi’s new MIX Fold 2 attempts to bring the thickness of the folded phone closer to that of a regular one. Thus, it’s rumored to be just over 5mm thick for each half, for a total of 10mm in thickness, which is similar to what we see on recent phones like the Zenfone 9.

Xiaomi’s new foldable phone specs are among the highest

But we don’t know what effect the low thickness might have on the phone’s performance. We can assume it will integrate a smaller battery, or less capable cameras. However, the leaked specs list suggests that the screens will be the same size as on the MIX Fold 1: 8″ foldable and 6.5″ exterior, both equipped with 120Hz OLED panels and LTPO technology. Of course, inside we could find Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 12GB RAM, 512GB or 1TB storage and fast charging at 56W. The 5,020 mAh battery on the original MIX Fold probably won’t “survive” the transition.

Along with the Mi MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi is preparing to launch two other devices: a pair of true wireless Buds 4 Pro headphones, and a Pad 5 Pro 12.4″ productivity tablet. The launch will take place tomorrow, August 11, in China, starting at 2pm EST.
