After its successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival, it’s time to watch the trailer for The Whale, in which we can see Brendan Fraser return in force after years of hiatus.
Brendan Fraser stars as Charlie, a middle-aged English teacher trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter after leaving both her and her mother for his gay lover, whose death has led to the main character’s weight gain. Joining Fraser in the cast are also Sadie Sink from Stranger Things, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins.
A24 has revealed the first trailer for The Whale.
Fraser’s initial departure from the film industry has become, for many fans of the actor, an emotional story. The Mummy star previously spoke about having to take a break from acting because he felt overwhelmed after accusing the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association of sexual assault. The divorce he went through and the death of his mother didn’t help either, all of which contributed to his sinking into depression.
Fraser began to take on roles again, for example in Showtime’s The Affair and Danny Boyle’s miniseries Trust, in which he earned rave reviews.
Brendan Fraser received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, with the audience giving him a six-minute standing ovation.
Will Brendan Fraser win an Oscar for his role in The Whale?
Of course, at the moment it’s hard to say whether Brendan Fraser will go home with an Oscar for his role in The Whale, since the film hasn’t been released in cinemas yet.
However, judging by what we can see from the trailer, the chances are pretty good.
The Whale opens in theaters on December 9, 2022.
