Jake Gyllenhaal will play a soldier who seems to have a huge debt to pay, and you can see that in the new trailer for The Covenant, direct from Guy Ritchie.
Gyllenhaal is certainly no stranger to intense roles, having starred in dramas like Nightcrawler, Rendition, Zodiac, Prisoners, Stronger and more.
Indeed, the actor seems drawn to roles that require fierce emotional commitment and involve characters who are placed in extremely stressful situations.
What you can see in the new trailer for The Covenant
The trailer is certainly intense as it shows you the story of the character played by Jake Gyllenhaal, a soldier suffering from amnesia who feels compelled to return to the battlefield for deeply personal reasons.
Originally, the film was supposed to be called The Interpreter, but this idea was later dropped.
As revealed in the film’s synopsis, Ahmed is the one who saves the life of Gyllenhaal’s character, Sergeant John Kinley, after he is wounded in combat in Afghanistan.
Kinley later remembers nothing of what happened to him, but he does remember Ahmed. The former is called back into combat, but discovers that Ahmed is still trapped in Afghanistan with his family and in danger from the Taliban.
In addition to Jake Gyllenhaal, the cast of The Covenant also includes Emily Beecham (1899), Alexander Ludwig (Vikings), Antony Starr (The Boys), Jason Wong (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen), Christian Ochoa (Halo) and Bobby Schofield (Don’t Breathe 2).
The big surprise here is probably the involvement of Ritchie, a director not necessarily known for serious dramas, but who has made a name for himself with fun action films full of bizarre characters.
The Covenant is scheduled for release on April 21, 2023.
