UCAM sets an example in Europe: when studying, competing and taking care of the mind are part of the same game

The team UCAM University Esports won the title of European champion in the VALORANT in the UNIVERSITY Esports Masters (UEMasters), the largest international university video game tournament in Europe. The victory not only represents a competitive achievement, but the triumph of a university model where academic performance, excellence in esports and mental health go hand in hand.

Representing Spain from Murciathe team overcame several European universities and defeated in the final the team of the Akdeniz University of Turkey. As a reward, he took 1,500 euros and international recognition.

To be able to represent Spain at an international level is a source of pride for the whole team and for our university.

Integral training: competing at the highest level while remaining a student.

This has been the first year of UCAM in which he has created a team of VALORANT with a clear goal: to train university students who can also compete at the highest level. The talent search included personal interviews and technical testing of the game, ensuring that the academic and human component was never left behind.

Study while competing. That is our essence.

The invisible value of the team: mental health and well-being.

Victory is a reflection of a structure that prioritizes the physical and emotional health of the players:

• Maria Valeria Plazaa university sports psychologist, helps to manage competitive stress, together with Sergio Paredespsychologist of the professional team.
• Sergio ‘Sergalax’ Catalá, CAFD student, was “key as technical staff to achieve the objectives” and was promoted to Head Coach of the professional team, “demonstrating that the project also boosts careers”.

A successful team needs a great staff behind it. We don’t compete alone. The psychologists are a great help in times of stress. The players also have access to university facilities such as the gym to stay in shape or prevent injuries and the canteen to eat a balanced diet.

UCAM bets for an integral vision of e-sports: compete, study and grow as people. Victory in UEMasters not only puts UCAM on the European podium, it also sets a new standard in university esports: that of teams where performance is not only measured in victories, but in personal, professional and academic development.

Looking to the future, we hope to continue to be present in the same way within the sector and to be able to contribute as much value as we can as a university.
