Kingda Ka, what used to be the tallest roller coaster in the world, will be destroyed today, within hours. This 456 ft (139 m) behemoth opened in May 2005, but was closed last year by the park Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, United States. It is believed that maintenance costs were too expensive and that it would be better to tear it down and build something new.
In recent months, the lower parts of the tracks have been removed. But the giant top hat is too big to tear it down with cranes, so it will be demolished with a series of “rapid explosions.” Roller coaster fans have been anticipating this day, which has been postponed several times this month because of weather conditions, but the time is set and Kingda Ka will be blown up today Friday between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET. That’s between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. CET, an hour earlier in the United Kingdom.
TV cameras are in place, neighbors in Jackson have been warned about the noise. “Keep pets inside if they are sensitive to loud noises. If you or someone you know is bothered by loud noises, take the necessary precautions“.
For months since news broke that the attraction would close forever – and evaporate – roller coaster fans have been mourning the spectacular but short-lived roller coaster. Many will likely try to take one last look at the massive structure, which used to offer unparalleled thrills at 128 mph (206 km/h) and 12 million rides over 19 years.
Meanwhile, local TV news will report live on the explosion. NBC is already announcing their live coverage, while the park advised spectators to stay far from the scene.
After all the debris and dust is cleared, the park will begin construction on a new, record-breaking roller coaster that will take its place and open next year. It is unknown what will happen. However, the record for the tallest roller coaster on Earth will be taken by a new monster, Falcon’s Flight, which is already fully built in Saudi Arabia.
