Avatar: The Way of Water breaks record after record and recently ticked off another pretty significant one.
Specifically, it managed to gross over $2 billion.
The film, which debuted on December 16, 2022, is a rather belated sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 debut Avatar, which remains the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
Avatar: The Way of Water brings back the original cast, in this case Sam Worthington, Zoe SaldaƱa, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, as well as newcomers like Edie Falco, Jack Champion and Kate Winslet.
Avatar: The Path of Water looks unstoppable
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: The Way of Water’s box office hit a new milestone this weekend.
The film has grossed a total of $2.024 billion worldwide, one of only six films to ever surpass the $2 billion milestone in cinema history.
It is the third James Cameron film to achieve such a feat, following 1997’s Titanic and the first Avatar, which came in first place.
There are quite a few factors contributing to the extraordinary box office success of Avatar: The Way of Water. First and foremost is the reputation that comes with the Avatar title.
The long-awaited sequel is a sequel to one of the most popular films of all time, so there was enough of an audience waiting to see what happens next in the story.
The Avatar films are also known for their use of state-of-the-art special effects, so audience interest in them might have something to do with that as well.
Another thing that has helped the film achieve success is the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has limited the number of blockbusters in cinemas over the last few years, so people now tend to get excited more easily than usual.
