Matter is finally catching on in the smart home
Light, electricity, water, shutters, air conditioning and of course heating – I completely overhauled all of this as part of my renovation work. Technically I’m still there, but the goal is in sight. The focus was on a smart apartment. Due to my affinity for Apple products, I will rely on Apple HomeKit and devices with Matter support.
What is Matter and Thread in the Smart Home?
Matter is a young initiative that aims to improve compatibility and security in smart homes. Developed by, among others, the inventors of the Zigbee wireless standard, Matter finally unifies communication between smart home devices for different device ecosystems – whether for Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa and Co.
Matter supports various things for this purpose Communication protocols such as WiFi, Thread and Ethernet. Smart home devices that also support the Thread wireless standard are particularly exciting. Thread was specifically designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). In combination with the Matter standard, this results in the following advantages:
- Reliability: Thread networks are self-healing, can automatically find alternative communication paths and are therefore robust and reliable.
- Energy efficiency: Thread is energy efficient, which is a big advantage, especially for the large number of battery-powered and rechargeable IoT devices.
- Easy integration: The combination of Matter and Thread enables seamless communication between devices – without additional bridges or hubs.
- Scalability: A thread network is expanded by supported devices, becoming ever larger and therefore scalable almost limitlessly.
Make heating smart – for Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa & Co.
I was even more pleased when I found out about tado° X. I had ruled out the previous radiator thermostats from the German brand for my apartment, even though I had liked the design and the app from tado° for a long time. With the newly introduced Matter and Thread support tado° X now meets all my requirements.
Long-term experience in the smart home: Winter can come!
My radiators are gradually finding their way back to their original places and I will soon be able to put the new underfloor heating into operation. In the next part of my long-term test I can hopefully tell you about it Installation and configuration of the tado° X system report. The first step was to familiarize myself with the thermostats and accessories.
The first highlight: Smart radiator thermostats with battery and USB-C
Aside from the extremely compact design of the radiator thermostats, the flawless workmanship and the successful design, one thing immediately caught my eye: The radiator thermostats have removable batteries with USB-C. I’ve never seen this with any other thermostat and I really like it!

Smart home control of a heat pump or underfloor heating
We don’t have a heat pump, but I installed underfloor heating in the bathroom. For both cases, tado° has the smart room thermostat X up its sleeve. This means I don’t have to rely on another system or manual control exclusively for the bathroom a complete solution from a single source.
In this context, I also very much hope for a solution Controlling my air conditioning. The manufacturer already has a device without Matter support on the market, the smart air conditioning control V3+. Something new from tado° X would also solve this problem for me.
tado° X and Eve Thermo in size comparison
Before the renovation, I bought smart thermostats for selected radiators in the apartment a few years ago. The Eve Thermo shown below share a rather bulky look with the well-known Bosch thermostats. Quite apart from the functionality, this is one point that always bothered us about the old thermostats.
A direct comparison shows that the tado° X thermostats are much more compact and also more beautiful:
To me, the new radiator thermostat from tado° looks better than the competition in every respect.
My first conclusion about the Matter thermostats from tado°
After not hearing anything about Matter from tado° for a while, I was really happy about the announcement of tado° X. This means that the German brand also delivers, among other things the first smart home room thermostat with Matter and Thread radio for underfloor heating, gas boilers or heat pumps!
I really like the look and feel of the new products. The compact one Radiator thermostat with removable battery and a rotating ring for temperature control I particularly liked it. I’m looking forward to the installation and commissioning, which is no surprise given the current temperatures. In any case, I will tell you again soon about my experiences with the tado° X system.
