Smartwatches have reached a certain maturity in 2022, with many brands releasing only small upgrades to the established formula. However, three of the biggest players in the market have launched arguably their most important watches to date in the year ahead, taking the experience of monitoring health and sporting activity to new heights and new price points.
Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro
Samsung released a minor upgrade to the Galaxy Watch4 in 2022, the Watch5 is largely the same, with minor improvements in battery life and endurance. In terms of software and performance, the two are nearly identical.
Fortunately, those who wanted something new from Samsung in this category got the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, a watch that aims to compete in the extreme sports activities area. It’s larger, offers a few days of battery life, and integrates many features dedicated especially to those who are used to going hiking in the mountains, with all sorts of trail tracking capabilities.
It’s clear that the target audience for the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is the user interested in similar products from competitors, such as Garmin, but for those who prefer the Android platform.
Apple Watch Ultra
On the other hand, Apple also had a similar idea and created a watch to compete with Garmin’s top models, but for the iOS user audience. The Apple Watch Ultra comes with a new design and titanium construction, which is much more durable than the aluminum of Apple Watch series so far. This model also promises better battery life, but not as long as Samsung’s.
Apple, however, wants to make up for the Apple Watch Ultra’s low battery life with advanced features for diving, mountain hiking, and advanced security features.
Apple has put a big emphasis this year on user safety and is integrating the ability to create siren noise from the watch to assist emergency response teams in case of an emergency. This feature combined with the iPhone 14’s satellite call for help feature could be the difference between life and death in a crisis situation, Apple says.
Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro
Huawei Watch GT is one of the most popular smartwatch series on the market. Its success is due to a “serious” watch design with advanced monitoring features and long battery life. Huawei has continued this trend into 2022, with the Watch GT3 Pro (review) being by far the Chinese brand’s most eye-catching model of the past year.
The Watch GT 3 Pro tries to go with the idea that if something isn’t broken, you don’t have to change much. Thus, the design hasn’t evolved significantly, with the quality construction materials retained. Then, on the software side, the watch got a newer version of HarmonyOS, with more sports activities possible, but also new diving features.
While not as “smart” as the Apple Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch5 Pro, as it runs software more limited in capabilities, the Watch GT 3 Pro outperforms them both in terms of battery life, It can run up to two weeks on a single charge, and is compatible with both iOS and Android.
