Luganoa medium-sized city with a population of 63,000 in southern Switzerland, announced this week that it has expanded its means of payment with the crypto-currency for services and local taxes.
As of today, Lowens can therefore use their USDT bitcoins and stablecoins to pay bills issued by the city and local taxes, and do so “without exception” or limit on the amount.
The addition of this payment method follows the partnership forged in 2022 between Lugano and Tether. At the time, the stablecoin issuer announced that the alliance ” â‚¿ Plan “aimed to develop the use of cryptocurrencies in the town in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.
Lugano’s â‚¿ plan works, period […] I look forward to seeing Lugano continue to develop as a blockchain hub for the region and to seeing more communities around the world follow Lugano’s example of innovation and economic freedom,” commented Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s new boss, in a blog post.
The city says the process is “very simple” and the service is provided by startup Bitcoin Suisse, which converts digital assets directly into fiat currency.
Bitcoin Suisse had already enabled the canton of Zug to accept payments in BTC and ETH for its taxes. Since last spring, Crypto Valley has allowed tax payments of up to 1.5 million Swiss francs.
