Sunreef unveils plans for 108-ft solar-powered, fully autonomous, electric superyacht –

While electric vehicles are increasingly common on roads around the world, electric marine vehicles are less popular at the moment. Because battery technology is heavy and has limited range (you really don’t want to be stuck in the middle of the ocean with a dead battery), you don’t see too many electric boats. But they are becoming more common.

Superyacht manufacturer, Sunreef, has now unveiled plans for a new solar-powered, fully autonomous, electric superyacht called the Explorer Eco. The boat would be 108 feet long (33 meters) and even feature its own swimming pool, spa and indoor theater.

As for how the Explorer Eco manages to power all these luxury offerings, the boat will have two 400 kW electric motors, a 990 kW battery pack system and two 300 kW range extenders. How this will translate into range for the boat remains to be seen, but these are undoubtedly some mighty big all-electric systems.

The solar-powered portion of the boat allows the Explorer Eco to generate 50 kWp of clean solar power, meaning you can at least refill the battery as you make your ocean-wide journey.

There is no word yet on the price for the Explorer Eco or the release date, but this promise of true luxury combined with zero emissions is a very exciting one indeed.
